Once, I was performing in a Shakespearean play in the mid ‘90’s. Because my character was an Amazon, the director thought it would be a good idea to have a bone through my nose. I thought he was kidding. I was in denial about how serious he was. Then one day, he brings said bone. I had to take him aside and actually explain to him how racist this was, that there might actually be some other black people in the audience and that some white people would notice this too. I couldn’t believe that I had to point this out to him. I still smh.
